Tropical Storm Ada (Nokaen) is losing speed but not its impact, as it continues to hover over the coastal waters of Catanduanes, PAGASA reported in its 8:00 PM bulletin on Saturday, January 17.
As of 7:00 PM, Ada’s center was located near Pandan, Catanduanes, still packing maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and gusts of up to 105 km/h. The storm is now moving northwestward at 15 km/h, but its wide circulation means many areas are still feeling stormy conditions.
Wind Signals Remain Up
PAGASA has kept Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 raised over Albay, Catanduanes, and large portions of Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur, where gale-force winds may hit within 24 hours. These winds pose a minor to moderate threat to homes, trees, and power lines.
Meanwhile, Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect over parts of Isabela, Aurora, Quezon (including Polillo Islands), Marinduque, Romblon, the rest of Camarines Norte and Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, and several areas in Eastern Visayas, including Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar. Strong winds may still cause light damage and travel disruptions.
PAGASA warned that further strengthening is still possible, meaning Wind Signal No. 3 could be raised if Ada intensifies into a severe tropical storm.
Rains, Winds, and Monsoon Effects
Aside from strong winds, heavy rainfall remains a serious concern. Flooding and landslides may occur, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas. Residents are advised to stay updated through official rainfall and thunderstorm advisories.
The northeast monsoon (amihan) is also adding to the rough weather. Combined with Ada’s outer bands, strong to gale-force gusts are expected to affect parts of Northern Luzon, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas from today through Monday.
Coastal Flooding and Dangerous Seas
Coastal communities are being warned of a minimal to moderate storm surge, with waves reaching up to 2 meters over the next 48 hours in parts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas.
At sea, conditions are extremely hazardous. Waves may reach 5.5 meters off the coasts of Camarines Sur and Catanduanes, while other nearby waters will also experience rough to very rough seas. PAGASA strongly advises all mariners to remain in port and for small fishing boats and motorbancas not to venture out.
What to Expect Next
PAGASA said Ada will continue moving northwest before turning north to northeast on Sunday. From there, the storm may take a looping path east of Luzon, though its track could still change in the coming hours.
Ada is expected to remain a tropical storm, but forecasters caution that it could still intensify before eventually weakening into a tropical depression by Tuesday, as stronger monsoon winds take over.
Stay Alert
Authorities urge residents in high-risk areas to follow evacuation orders and safety instructions from local officials. Continuous monitoring of PAGASA updates is strongly advised.
The next tropical cyclone bulletin will be issued at 11:00 PM.
