The family of Nigerian student-athlete Chukwuemeka Divine Adili has requested an autopsy following his death in a drowning incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
In a statement, the Nigerian Embassy in Manila confirmed that Adili, a basketball player from Ateneo de Manila University, was among three student-athletes who were reportedly caught in a strong sea current during a team-building activity on June 8. Two students lost their lives in the incident, while one survived.
The embassy said it has been coordinating closely with Adili’s family, Ateneo de Manila University, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant authorities. According to the embassy, the family specifically requested that an autopsy be conducted before arrangements for the repatriation of Adili’s remains to Nigeria are finalized.
Officials also noted that Philippine authorities have already begun investigating the incident. While public interest and questions about the tragedy continue to grow, the embassy said it has not received any official information indicating foul play at this time.
The Nigerian Embassy expressed its condolences to Adili’s family, friends, teammates, and the wider Nigerian community in the Philippines. It also extended sympathies to the family of the Filipino student-athlete who died in the same incident.
As investigations move forward, the embassy urged the public to avoid speculation and refrain from spreading unverified information online, emphasizing the importance of allowing authorities to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
The embassy added that it remains committed to providing assistance to the bereaved family and monitoring developments in the case.
