Alas Pilipinas Women battled hard but came up short against a strong South Korean squad, falling in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22, in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup on Tuesday in Candon, Ilocos Sur.
Despite the loss, the Filipinas showed fighting spirit—especially in the third set, where they briefly threatened to extend the match.
Veteran outside hitter Alyssa Valdez helped spark a late rally with back-to-back aces, giving Alas a slim 18-15 lead. Alyssa Solomon followed up with key hits as the Philippines stretched the advantage to 19-16, sending the home crowd into celebration.
However, South Korea quickly turned things around. Powered by Sohwi Kang, the Koreans unleashed an 8-1 run to regain control and eventually close out the match.
Middle blockers Thea Gagate and Niña Ytang led Alas with nine and eight points respectively, while Valdez and Solomon finished with seven points each.
The result drops Alas to a 2-2 record in the tournament, but the team continues to show improvement and competitiveness against higher-ranked Asian teams.
Despite the defeat, the match highlighted the team’s growing potential as they prepare for the rest of their AVC campaign.
