Alex Eala continues her rise on the international tennis stage as she prepares for the 2026 Italian Open in Rome, one of the final major tournaments before the French Open later this month.
The 20-year-old Filipina star is set to face Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the opening round of the prestigious WTA 1000 event after climbing to a new career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of No. 42 this week.
Eala has become one of Asia’s fastest-rising tennis players following a strong 2026 campaign that included impressive runs at major tournaments earlier this year. She reached the Round of 16 at both Indian Wells and the Miami Open, while also making quarterfinal appearances in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Following her campaign in Madrid last month, Eala returned to the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain to continue preparing for the clay-court season. She also withdrew from the WTA 125 Catalonia Open to focus on the higher-level competition in Rome.
The Italian Open marks another important stop in Eala’s European clay-court campaign ahead of Roland Garros. Although she experienced early exits in some recent tournaments, the young Filipina remains focused on improving her consistency against top-ranked opponents.
Her opening-round match against Frech is expected to be a tough test, with both players coming off recent appearances at the Madrid Open. The winner is projected to face China’s Xinyu Wang in the next round.
Eala’s growing success has also attracted increasing international attention, especially among Filipino fans overseas who continue to support her during tournaments across Europe and the United States.
With the French Open approaching, Eala is expected to compete in more clay-court events as she continues building momentum in what has already become one of the best seasons of her young career.
