Apple Inc. has unveiled its newest high-performance chips, M5 Pro and M5 Max, designed to power the latest MacBook Pro and deliver major upgrades for demanding professional tasks.

Announced in Cupertino, California, the chips are built using Apple’s new Fusion Architecture, which combines two dies into a single system on a chip (SoC). This design integrates a powerful CPU, next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators, Media Engine, unified memory controller, and Thunderbolt 5 support.

Both chips feature a new 18-core CPU with six high-performance “super cores” and 12 performance cores, delivering up to 30% faster performance for professional workloads. The upgraded GPU can scale up to 40 cores, offering more than four times the AI computing power compared to the previous generation and up to 35% better graphics performance for apps using ray tracing.

“M5 Pro and M5 Max are a monumental leap forward for Apple silicon, leveraging our new Fusion Architecture to scale the capabilities of Apple silicon while preserving its core tenets of performance, power efficiency, and unified memory architecture,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies.

The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory, while the M5 Max can handle up to 128GB, making them ideal for AI workloads, large datasets, and advanced graphics projects.

Apple said the new MacBook Pro models powered by the chips will be available for pre-order starting March 6, with availability beginning March 11.
