Ateneo de Davao University has officially named its Senior High School covered courts after the late Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia, honoring a beloved member of the university community whose life and legacy left a lasting impact on generations of students.
In a memorandum dated June 18, University President Fr. Karel S. San Juan, SJ announced that the Board of Trustees had approved the designation of the facility as the Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia Covered Courts (RBBCC) through Board Resolution No. 2026-0020.
The decision came just days after the university held a wake Mass for Baterbonia on June 14, during which school officials pledged to commemorate his contributions in a lasting way.
According to the memorandum, the covered courts hold special significance because they were where Baterbonia developed not only as an athlete but also as a person. The university said his name would remain there to inspire future generations of students who will pass through the campus.
School administrators are expected to install new signage and hold a dedication ceremony in the coming months, with details to be announced later.
Baterbonia was widely known in the Ateneo de Davao community and was remembered for his dedication to sports and student development. The decision to name the courts after him reflects the university's tradition of recognizing individuals whose contributions have helped shape the institution and its values.
Founded in 1948, Ateneo de Davao University is one of the leading Catholic and Jesuit institutions in the Philippines. Over the years, the university has honored members of its community who exemplified excellence, service, and leadership, values that remain central to its mission.
With the renaming of the facility, the university hopes that the legacy of Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia will continue to live on and inspire young athletes and students for years to come.
