BAGUIO CITY — Residents and tourists woke up to a chilly Friday morning as the temperature in the Summer Capital dropped to 10.6°C around 5 a.m., marking the lowest reading recorded so far this season.

The cold weather is attributed to the Amihan or northeast monsoon, which brings cooler air from the northern regions. PAGASA said this weather pattern usually peaks between December and February, meaning cold mornings may continue in the coming weeks.

Baguio’s naturally cool climate is also intensified by its elevation of about 1,500 meters above sea level, making it significantly colder than lowland areas.

Although the 10.6°C reading is unusually low for this season, it remains higher than the city’s all-time record low of 6.3°C, recorded in 1961.

What Residents Are Saying

Many locals took to social media to share their reactions, while commuters bundled up in layers, scarves, and gloves to face the cold.

Health Reminder

Health officials advise residents — especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions — to stay warm and practice proper hygiene to avoid colds and flu.
