Baligod Warns Of Threats To Senate Independence

Lawyer Levito D. Baligod has voiced concern over what he described as growing efforts to undermine the Senate's independence, following the withdrawal of an invitation for him to participate in an upcoming investigation.

In a Facebook post, Baligod said he received an invitation to attend the June 4 hearing involving the inquiry into the alleged theft of public funds, but claimed that the invitation was later revoked.

“Mga Kababayan, dito natin makita kung ano ang pinagdadaanan ngayon ng naiiwang institusyon na nagpupumilit maging independent - ang ating Senado,” Baligod wrote.

According to him, the withdrawal of the invitation reflects broader issues affecting the Senate and its ability to carry out investigations.

“The Senate is undergoing immolation, courtesy of the minority bloc which is enabled by the executive and the HOR,” he said.

Baligod also suggested that other political figures could face similar developments in the future, citing several names in his post.

He further alleged that some individuals are resisting investigations into the alleged misuse of government funds because of what key officials and witnesses may reveal.

“Klaro na ngayon kung sino ang mga ayaw maimbistigahan ang trilyones na pagnanakaw sa kaban ng Bayan. Takot sila sa sasabihin ni Adrian Bersamin, Amenah Pangandaman, ang B18 at iba pa.”

Baligod ended his statement with a warning about the possible implications for democratic institutions.

“The fall of the majority bloc is not only the fall of the Senate but the FALL of democratic institutions into the strong hands of Malacañan.”

The lawyer's remarks come amid ongoing political tensions surrounding Senate investigations and debates over the chamber's role in scrutinizing government actions.
