A fresh partnership is taking root in Mindanao as the Bangsamoro Government joins forces with the Forest Foundation Philippines (FFP) to strengthen forest restoration, community-based management, and climate initiatives across the region.
The collaboration was sealed through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on April 16 at the foundation’s office in Makati City. The deal brings together the Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy (MENRE) and FFP in a coordinated push to protect and rehabilitate the region’s rich natural resources.
Leading the signing were MENRE Minister Akmad Brahim, Director General Badr Salendab, and FFP Executive Director Jose Canivel.
For Brahim, the message is simple: forests are central to life in Bangsamoro. He described them as vital sources of water, clean air, and cultural heritage—resources that must be protected for future generations. He also stressed that challenges like climate change and deforestation are too large for any single agency to handle alone, making partnerships like this essential.
The agreement goes beyond tree planting. It aims to build long-term environmental policies in the region, support program implementation, and open opportunities for joint project funding.
Canivel echoed the importance of the region, noting that Bangsamoro is home to vast forests and mangroves that play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and in meeting the Philippines’ global environmental commitments.
Backing the effort is a significant investment from the Bangsamoro Government, which has set aside ₱168 million this year to reforest around 2,600 hectares of degraded land. The initiative is expected to deliver not just environmental gains, but also social and economic benefits for local communities.
With this partnership in place, Bangsamoro is doubling down on a future that balances development with environmental protection—one forest at a time.
