Senator Christopher “Bong” Go returned to the ground in Pasay City on Tuesday, February 3, extending assistance to families affected by a recent fire in Barangay 139, Zone 15, and renewing his call for stronger disaster preparedness measures nationwide.
Go personally visited the fire site to check the damage and speak with affected residents. He assured families that he would continue to show up wherever help is needed.
"Tutulong ako saan mang sulok kayo ng Pilipinas, basta kaya ng katawan at panahon ko, pupuntahan ko kayo. Ngayon po may trabaho pa po ako sa Senado, tatakbo pa po ako doon. Importante po walang nasaktan," he told the crowd.
He reminded families to value life above material losses, adding, “Ang lagi ko pong sinasabi, ang gamit ay mabibili natin ‘yan… Pero ang perang kikitain ay hindi mabibili ang buhay.”
During the relief activity at Valdenibro Basketball Court, 43 families received financial aid, rice, grocery packs, water containers, snacks, fruits, and shirts. Some beneficiaries also went home with bicycles, shoes, mobile phones, and a watch.
Go used the opportunity to highlight several key measures he is pushing in the Senate, including Republic Act 12076 or the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which establishes permanent and fully equipped evacuation centers across the country. As its principal author and co-sponsor, he urged officials to prioritize its implementation.
“Ako po ay nakikiusap sa mga kasamahan ko sa gobyerno. Bigyang prayoridad ang evacuation centers dahil batas naman po ito kesa nasasayang sa flood control na ginagawang gatasan ng iilan po,” Go said.
He also stressed the importance of RA 11589 or the BFP Modernization Act, a ten-year program aimed at strengthening the Bureau of Fire Protection with more personnel, modern equipment, and advanced training.
Go further pushed Senate Bill 415, the proposed Rental Housing Subsidy Program, which seeks to give temporary rental support to families displaced by disasters as they work toward rebuilding their homes.
Local officials, including Congressman Toni Calixto, Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano, Vice Mayor Mark Calixto, Councilor Allo Arceo, and Barangay Captain Rowell Toto Ramos, were acknowledged for their efforts in assisting affected residents.
Go also asked beneficiaries to include former President Rodrigo Duterte in their prayers, saying, "May pakiusap po ako sa inyo, ipagdasal po natin si Tatay Digong, ang kanya kaligtasan at kaniyang kalusugan."
Before the event, the senator was spotted supporting a local vendor selling hotdogs and barbecue, emphasizing his advocacy for small livelihoods.
“Tandaan natin, minsan lang tayo dadaan sa mundong ito. Kung ano pong kabutihan o tulong na puwede natin gawin sa ating kapwa ay gawin na natin ngayon dahil hindi na tayo babalik sa mundong ito,” Go said as he wrapped up the activity.
