Senator Bong Go personally traveled to quake-stricken Malapatan on June 10 to provide assistance, offer condolences to grieving families, and check on residents affected by the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani Province earlier this week.

Accompanied by local officials, including Malapatan Mayor Jun Sumbo Jr., Go visited affected communities and evacuation centers, where he met with families who lost loved ones, residents who were injured, and others displaced by the disaster.

The senator expressed his sympathies to the victims and encouraged residents to remain strong and prayerful as they recover from the tragedy. He emphasized that while material possessions can be replaced, human life is priceless, urging everyone to prioritize safety and support one another during difficult times.

During his visit, Go personally paid his respects to several families mourning relatives who died in the earthquake. He visited the wakes of the victims and assured their loved ones of his prayers and continued support.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck at 7:37 a.m. on June 8, with its epicenter located offshore near Maasim.

The Office of Civil Defense reported that as of June 10, the disaster had left 45 people dead, 17 missing, and 630 injured. Authorities also recorded nearly 2,000 aftershocks following the main tremor.

In response to the widespread damage, the Provincial Government of Sarangani Province placed the province under a state of calamity.

To help meet the immediate needs of survivors, Go distributed grocery packs, snacks, shirts, and financial assistance to affected residents at the Malapatan Evacuation Center. He also pledged to continue coordinating with government agencies and local officials to ensure that aid and essential services reach communities in need.

As chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, the senator reminded victims, particularly those suffering from injuries or emotional trauma, to seek medical attention and avail themselves of government assistance programs.

After completing his visit to Malapatan, Go proceeded to Glan to lead another relief operation for earthquake victims there.

The senator underscored the importance of unity and resilience in overcoming the crisis, assuring affected families that the government remains committed to helping communities recover and rebuild from the devastation caused by the earthquake.
