When the game was on the line, Justin Brownlee once again showed why he remains Barangay Ginebra’s go-to man in the biggest moments.
Brownlee knocked down a tough fall-away jumper with just 0.6 seconds left, lifting Ginebra to a dramatic 102-100 victory over TNT in Game 1 of the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The veteran import may not have posted eye-popping numbers, but he came through when it mattered most. His game-winning basket over Chris McCullough capped a late Ginebra surge after the Gin Kings nearly let an 18-point lead slip away.
Before Brownlee's heroics, RJ Abarrientos sparked Ginebra’s comeback with back-to-back four-point plays that turned the tide and gave the Kings a 100-97 advantage. TNT responded immediately as RR Pogoy drained a clutch triple to even the score at 100-all, setting up the dramatic finish.
Abarrientos finished as Ginebra’s top scorer with 24 points, along with seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals. He credited the team's resilience to lessons learned from its hard-fought semifinal series against Rain or Shine.
Brownlee added 23 points, eight assists, and four rebounds, while Troy Rosario chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds. Scottie Thompson also delivered with 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
Despite the victory, Ginebra coach Tim Cone admitted he was frustrated by his team’s fourth-quarter performance after seeing their comfortable lead disappear.
The Tropang 5G mounted a furious comeback and even grabbed a 91-88 lead behind a barrage of outside shooting from Jordan Heading, Pogoy, and Rey Nambatac. TNT’s rally turned what looked like a runaway game into a tense finish.
McCullough paced TNT with 25 points, while Pogoy added 22 and Nambatac scored 19. Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser and Calvin Oftana contributed 12 points each in the losing effort.
In the end, however, Brownlee had the final say, delivering another signature clutch moment to hand Ginebra the early edge in the best-of-seven championship series.
The Gin Kings now head into Game 2 on Friday looking to build on their momentum and move two wins closer to another title.
