Justin Brownlee delivered one of the most memorable performances of his PBA career, lifting Barangay Ginebra to a thrilling 100-95 overtime victory over TNT in Game 5 of the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Independence Day at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With the series tied at two games apiece entering Friday’s showdown, Brownlee refused to let the Gin Kings fall behind. The veteran import exploded for a career-best 54 points, while also grabbing 14 rebounds, as Ginebra seized a crucial 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven championship series.

Backed by a roaring crowd of 18,039 fans, Ginebra found itself in serious trouble for most of the game. TNT appeared headed for victory after building an 11-point lead in the third quarter and maintaining control deep into the fourth.

The Tropang 5G were ahead 87-80 with less than four minutes remaining and seemed poised to move within one win of the championship.

But Brownlee had other plans.

The three-time Best Import caught fire when it mattered most, unleashing a personal scoring run that erased TNT’s lead and put Ginebra ahead, 89-87, with just over a minute left in regulation. Roger Pogoy answered with a clutch basket to tie the game and force overtime, but Brownlee was far from finished.

In the extra period, he continued his offensive masterclass, scoring key baskets to help Ginebra pull away and secure the hard-fought win.

“I just wanted to stay aggressive for my team,” Brownlee said after the game. “TNT played very tough and very hard, but we showed our never-say-die spirit tonight.”

The 54-point explosion surpassed Brownlee’s previous career-high of 51 points, which he recorded against San Miguel during last season’s Governors’ Cup eliminations.

Ginebra head coach Tim Cone could only marvel at his import’s performance.

“I said before that we shouldn’t be too Justin-centered,” Cone joked. “Then he comes out and scores 54. He was incredible.”

Cone admitted TNT’s defensive approach forced Ginebra to lean heavily on Brownlee’s scoring.

“The way they defended us, they put the pressure on Justin to create and finish plays. We really had no choice but to ride him, and he delivered,” he said.

RJ Abarrientos contributed 13 points for the Gin Kings, while Japeth Aguilar added 12 and Troy Rosario chipped in 10. Scottie Thompson finished with six markers.

TNT, meanwhile, received a huge effort from Chris McCullough, who tallied 38 points and 16 rebounds. Pogoy added 23 points, while Jordan Heading scored 13.

Despite their strong showing, the Tropang 5G had no answer for Brownlee’s heroics down the stretch.

Now holding a 3-2 series advantage, Ginebra is just one victory away from capturing the Commissioner’s Cup crown. The Gin Kings will have their first chance to close out the series in Game 6 on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. If TNT manages to force a decider, a winner-take-all Game 7 will be played on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
