Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge Reopens To Light Vehicles After Collapse
Screengrab from DPWH
Light vehicles can now cross between Cabagan and Santa Maria in Isabela following the completion of a temporary steel connector on the damaged Cabagan–Santa Maria Bridge. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) finished the interim structure in under two months, restoring a crucial link over the Cagayan River that had been unusable since part of the bridge collapsed in February 2025.
The restoration was carried out under the leadership of Vince Dizon, who became DPWH Secretary on September 1, 2025, after the resignation of former Secretary Manuel Bonoan amid broader scrutiny of flood control projects.
The reopening comes after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. instructed the DPWH to provide an immediate solution while work on a permanent bridge continues.
For now, only light vehicles are allowed on the temporary crossing. Authorities are working to expedite construction of a permanent structure capable of supporting heavier traffic, including trucks.
Local residents and motorists welcomed the reopening, noting that it will improve travel, access to essential services, and the movement of goods while the long-term bridge project progresses.
