Tension continues to build inside the Senate as rumors swirl about a possible arrest warrant against Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa. But amid the growing noise online and in political circles, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano stepped forward to clarify the Senate’s position.

Speaking to reporters, Cayetano stressed that the Senate would follow the law and respect legal processes, but only within the bounds of Philippine jurisdiction.

“We are lawmakers, we're not lawbreakers,” Cayetano said, emphasizing that any warrant must first pass through Philippine courts before it can be recognized locally.

The statement came as questions mounted over whether the Senate would shield dela Rosa if an arrest order were issued. Cayetano acknowledged the chamber’s long-standing practice of giving senators temporary refuge during legal battles, but clarified that it is meant to protect due process—not help anyone evade accountability.

According to Cayetano, the Senate’s role is to make sure all legal remedies are exhausted and that constitutional rights are respected before any action is carried out.

He also urged the public to avoid getting swept up in political drama and online speculation, reminding everyone that the country’s legal system should remain the guiding principle.

“But we're a nation of laws, not of men,” he added.

Despite the controversy, Cayetano said the Senate remains focused on bigger national concerns, particularly economic measures that could affect ordinary Filipinos. He noted that political tensions should not derail pending legislation and other urgent matters before the chamber.

For now, senators are reportedly waiting for official guidance from Philippine courts instead of reacting to outside pressure or unverified reports.

As the issue continues to unfold, the debate over the Senate’s so-called “safe haven” tradition has once again returned to the spotlight—raising questions about whether the practice still has a place in today’s political and legal landscape.
