A leadership shake-up unfolded at the Senate on Monday, May 11, after Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano was formally installed as the new Senate President, replacing Sen. Vicente Sotto III.
The change came after all Senate leadership positions were declared vacant and a vote was held inside the plenary session.
Cayetano secured the top post following a 13–1–10 vote (YES–ABSTAIN–NO), sealing his return to one of the most powerful positions in the chamber.
The vote effectively ended Sotto’s stint as Senate President and marked a fresh shift in leadership inside the upper chamber, which has recently been at the center of intense political realignments.
Lawmakers moved quickly after the vote to reorganize Senate leadership roles, signaling a new direction for the chamber moving forward.
