Cayetano: Truth Must Come Out

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano renewed his call for transparency and accountability in government, saying the country must choose between exposing alleged wrongdoing or allowing it to be concealed.
In a livestream on June 18, Cayetano said he and his allies would continue pushing for what they believe is the truth behind alleged irregularities involving flood control projects and other government programs. He said the Senate should function as a venue for investigating public concerns rather than becoming a tool for covering them up.
The senator emphasized that nation-building must be anchored on truth, justice, and the rule of law, citing principles under the 1987 Constitution. He added that strong institutions and honest governance are necessary to address the country’s economic challenges and restore public trust.
Cayetano also rejected accusations that he had neglected his duties during his time as Senate President, saying legislative work continued under his leadership and that committee processes were affected by delays in the designation of some members’ representatives.
He responded to claims raised by Senators Panfilo Lacson and Win Gatchalian regarding Senate expenditures, saying the figures cited represented the chamber’s regular operating costs based on its approved budget.
The senator further alleged that political tensions within the Senate, including leadership changes in previous Congresses, were influenced by broader disagreements over legislative priorities and high-profile investigations, including issues involving public works and other government programs. He also said witnesses were willing to testify and called for fair hearings to ensure accountability.
Cayetano said corruption in the country is systemic, affecting infrastructure and development programs such as flood control, irrigation, farm-to-market roads, and school facilities. He warned that failure to address these issues would continue to weaken public institutions and economic performance.
Despite political differences within the chamber, Cayetano said he remains committed to continuing his advocacy through legislative work and public communication, including social media, and thanked supporters who continue to engage with his position on governance reforms.
