Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano emphasized the importance of truth, accountability, and institutional integrity in a wide-ranging speech before Senate media, overseas Filipino workers, and the general public.
Cayetano said national discussions must begin with a shared understanding of truth, especially amid political divisions and ongoing Senate investigations. He stressed that public discourse should be guided by facts rather than competing narratives.
He also highlighted concerns raised by overseas Filipino workers, saying corruption remains one of the most pressing issues affecting their trust in government. He said he has received numerous messages from OFWs expressing frustration over corruption.
The senator anchored part of his message on biblical principles, saying truth should serve as the foundation of decision-making in government and public debate.
Cayetano said institutions such as the Senate, courts, and investigative bodies are imperfect but function as human instruments in the pursuit of facts and justice. He added that despite their limitations, these institutions remain essential in uncovering truth and ensuring accountability.
He also pointed to ongoing political tensions in the Senate, including disagreements over committee proceedings, walkouts, and procedural disputes between majority and minority blocs. He urged lawmakers to remain focused on evidence-based discussions despite political differences.
Cayetano further discussed issues involving flood control projects, alleged ghost projects, and government infrastructure spending. He said investigations must rely on complete and verified data, warning against partial or incomplete reports that could mislead the public.
He also touched on the impeachment proceedings involving Vice President Sara Duterte, saying the process must be guided by evidence and proper procedure rather than political narratives.
The senator called for unity within the Senate, urging both majority and minority blocs to work together on pressing national issues such as inflation, poverty, and corruption. He warned that political division weakens governance and urged colleagues to prioritize long-term national interests over partisan conflict.
Cayetano ended his remarks by reiterating his call for continued dialogue and further hearings, saying the public deserves transparency and a clearer understanding of how decisions are made in government.
