Cayetano Warns Against 'Politics Of Distraction'

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has called for greater focus on addressing corruption, warning that political distractions could prevent meaningful reforms and allow deeper problems in government to persist.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Cayetano reflected on what he described as the Philippines’ “3D” cycle—Disruption, Distraction, and Destruction—saying the country’s future depends on confronting corruption instead of allowing public attention to shift away from key issues.

"We disagree on much, yet we all pray for a better Philippines. A strong nation where everyone is safe and at least living comfortable lives," Cayetano said.

He argued that corruption, poor governance, and weak public institutions continue to hinder the country's progress, adding that periods of crisis should be viewed as opportunities for renewal rather than reasons for despair.

According to Cayetano, genuine change begins by acknowledging problems and holding those responsible accountable. However, he claimed that those who benefit from corruption often redirect public attention to avoid reforms.

"That’s why, for a short time—maybe not too short—the economy seems to be doing well. Paldo money is trickling down. Pabango politics actually seems to work. Corruption doesn’t seem too bad. In fact, some even say, 'Nakakatulong pa!'" he said.

Cayetano also pointed to the government's flood control controversy, recalling President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s remark, "Mahiya naman kayo!", which he said initially raised hopes that systemic corruption would finally be addressed.

He questioned whether the opportunity for reform had been overshadowed by a series of other controversies.

"But somewhere along the way, disruption became distraction. Were the disruptors outplayed by the distractors?" he said.

The former senate president argued that repeated investigations into various issues, instead of sustained scrutiny of the flood control controversy, have weakened public trust and confidence in government institutions.

He also warned that when accountability becomes influenced by politics rather than principle, the country's justice system and democratic institutions suffer.

Citing the biblical story of Nehemiah, Cayetano said rebuilding the nation requires first confronting its problems honestly before pursuing lasting reforms.

"If we truly desire national transformation, then we must resist the politics of distraction and embrace the disruption that truth requires," he said.

He concluded by calling for reforms that expose corruption, restore public trust, strengthen institutions, and lay the foundation for a better future, saying, "Only then can we truly rise up and build."
