Cha Eun Woo has personally spoken out following reports linking him to a tax investigation, addressing fans and the public with a heartfelt apology and clarification.
Earlier, on January 22, reports surfaced that Cha Eun Woo had been investigated last year by Investigation Bureau 4 of the Seoul Regional Tax Office on suspicion of tax evasion. According to the reports, the National Tax Service issued an additional tax assessment exceeding 20 billion won, or roughly $13.6 million.
Amid the growing attention, the actor and idol took to Instagram on January 26 to directly address the issue in a handwritten-style statement, expressing regret and taking responsibility for the situation.
“Hello, this is Cha Eun Woo.
I sincerely bow my head and apologize for causing concern and disappointment to many people due to various recent matters involving myself.”
Cha Eun Woo shared that the situation prompted deep self-reflection, particularly on his responsibilities as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, especially when it comes to fulfilling tax obligations.
“Taking this incident as an opportunity, I have deeply reflected on whether my attitude toward my duty as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, particularly regarding tax payments, was sufficiently rigorous.”
He admitted struggling over what to say, concerned that explaining too much might come across as making excuses.
“I was worried that a lengthy explanation might sound like an excuse or even cause further fatigue, but I came to the conclusion that it is my duty to address this matter directly and offer my apology.”
The ASTRO member also addressed speculation surrounding his current military service, clarifying that his enlistment was not a way to avoid the controversy.
“Currently, I am serving in the military, but this was by no means an intentional choice to avoid this controversy. Last year, I was in a situation where I could no longer postpone my military enlistment, and thus I enlisted without being able to complete the tax investigation procedures.”
Despite this, he acknowledged his own shortcomings that may have led to misunderstandings.
“However, I deeply feel the responsibility for this misunderstanding, which also stemmed from my own shortcomings.”
He went on to express sincere remorse toward fans, colleagues, and everyone who has supported him throughout his 11-year career.
“For the long period of the past 11 years… I was able to be in this undeserved position as ‘Cha Eun Woo’ thanks to your unreserved love and support… Therefore, I am indescribably sorry for not even being able to repay but to have caused great pain and fatigue to all those who believed in and supported me.”
Cha Eun Woo emphasized that he will cooperate fully with authorities and accept whatever final decision is made.
“I will faithfully participate in the tax-related procedures that will proceed in the future.
Furthermore, I will humbly accept the final decision made by the relevant authorities and take full responsibility accordingly.”
He concluded his message by promising to live more responsibly moving forward.
“In the future, I will reflect on myself more rigorously and live with a greater sense of responsibility, with the mindset of repaying the love I have received.
Once again, I sincerely apologize for causing concern.”
As the issue continues to develop, Cha Eun Woo’s message signals accountability and a willingness to face the process ahead, while asking for understanding from those affected.
