Chavit Singson Says Arrest Won't Stop Him

Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson has insisted that his recent arrest will not deter him from pursuing what he describes as the truth behind the controversial flood control fund issue.

In a statement, Singson rejected claims that the case against him is merely a private cyber libel complaint, arguing that broader issues are at play.

“No one should be fooled into believing that this is simply about a private cyber libel complaint,” Singson said.

The veteran politician said he voluntarily complied with legal procedures and immediately sought to post bail through the courts. However, he claimed that a Quezon City judge declined to accept his bail application before he underwent police processing.

Singson also disputed reports that he was arrested at his residence, saying the circumstances surrounding the case raised questions.

“What should have been a routine legal proceeding was an attempt to publicly humiliate me,” he said, pointing to the rapid circulation of his booking photograph shortly after he was processed.

“Within minutes, my booking photograph was already circulating publicly. That does not happen without authorization,” he added.

The former governor further questioned what he described as unusual developments in the proceedings, including the designation of a judge from Manila and the speed with which the case moved forward.

Singson linked the case to his calls for an investigation into the government's flood control projects and the use of funds allocated to prevent flooding in communities.

“As I intensified my calls for a full investigation into the flood control controversy and sought answers regarding the use of flood control funds intended to protect Filipino communities from flooding, efforts to discredit and intimidate me soon followed,” he said.

He also suggested that attention was being diverted away from alleged corruption issues.

“Hindi ba kapansin-pansin na habang lumalabas ang mga detalye ng korapsyon, ang mga nagsasalita tungkol dito ang siyang pinatatahimik at sinasampahan ng kaso?” Singson said.

The former governor maintained that the focus should remain on how public funds were spent and who should be held accountable.

“Sa mga Pilipino, huwag tayong magpasindak. Ang tunay na isyu rito ay hindi cyber libel. Ang tunay na isyu ay kung saan napunta ang pera ng bayan, sino ang nakinabang, at sino ang dapat managot,” he said.

Despite the legal challenges he is facing, Singson vowed to continue speaking out.

“I will not be silenced,” he said.

“No arrest, no case, and no amount of political pressure will stop me from pursuing the truth and uncovering who the real mastermind is behind this scandal.”

The statement comes as questions continue to surround both the cyber libel case and Singson's allegations regarding the handling of flood control funds.
