China Coast Guard Inches Closer To Luzon; Filipino Fishermen Forced To Go Farther Out

In 2025, the China Coast Guard drew closer to the coastline of Luzon, according to a report from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) — a development that is now reshaping how Filipino fishermen carry out their daily work.

The report shows that as Chinese vessels moved nearer, Filipino fisherfolk were pushed farther away from Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal. The result: fishing activities became more scattered, with fishermen forced to venture farther out into the sea just to make a living.

But the PCG didn’t stay idle.

To respond to the growing tension, the agency intensified patrol operations, increasing its presence in the area to up to 31 patrol days per month — a significant step meant to keep the situation from escalating.

PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, said the agency’s goal is clear: “Our main objective is to prevent the Chinese Coast Guard in normalizing their illegal presence and ensure the safety and security of our Filipino fishermen.”

The movement of the Chinese vessels and the resulting displacement of Filipino fishing operations reflect the continuing struggle over Scarborough Shoal — a disputed area that remains a flashpoint between the Philippines and China.

For now, Filipino fishermen continue to adapt, moving farther from traditional fishing grounds while the PCG keeps a watchful eye, aiming to protect both the people and the waters they rely on.
