CIDG Eyes Possible Homicide, Hazing Angle In Ateneo Athletes' Deaths
FILE
Authorities are now looking into whether the deaths of two Ateneo basketball players who drowned in Dipaculao, Aurora may involve either a possible homicide case or a violation of the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said the incident is under deeper investigation as officials try to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, which has raised questions about whether the victims were part of any organized activity that involved risky physical challenges.

According to CIDG director PMGen. Robert Morico II, investigators are considering the scope of the Anti-Hazing Law beyond traditional fraternity systems.

“According to CIDG director PMGen. Robert Morico II, the Anti-Hazing Act covers not only fraternities but also any organization that mandates heavy or hazardous physical activities.”

Authorities explained that under the law, liability may arise if an organization requires or allows activities that expose participants to danger, including physical endurance tests or other high-risk exercises, even outside formal fraternity initiation rites.

The CIDG has not yet released further details on possible suspects or specific activities linked to the incident, as the investigation remains ongoing. Officials said they are still gathering statements and evidence to determine whether negligence, recklessness, or organized initiation practices may have played a role.
