Comelec Orders BARMM Parties, Sectoral Groups To Re-Register For Parliamentary Polls

The Commission on Elections is pressing the reset button for political organizations in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, calling on all parties and sectoral groups planning to take part in this year’s Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections to register again.
According to Comelec Chairman George Garcia, the move follows the passage of Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 88, which effectively voided earlier accreditations granted to political groups in the region. Because of this, even the 20 accredited Regional Parliamentary Political Parties and 191 Parliamentary Sectoral Organizations must undergo a new accreditation process.
Garcia said all previous accreditations have already been disregarded, which means the poll body will once again accept petitions from groups seeking recognition either as a sectoral organization or as a political party.
He added that the election commission plans to reopen the accreditation period next week. The opportunity will not only apply to groups that were previously accredited but also to new applicants and organizations whose earlier requests for accreditation were denied.
Under the proposed schedule, Regional Parliamentary Political Parties with at least 5,000 registered voters in BARMM may file their applications from March 17 to March 20 before the Bangsamoro Registration and Accreditation Committee. New applicants and those that were previously denied will need to submit a Verified Petition for Registration, while political parties that were already accredited before will only need to file a Verified Manifestation.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Sectoral Organizations will have a slightly longer period to apply, from March 16 to March 23. These groups must also submit the names of their three nominees as part of their application. Organizations that were previously denied and new applicants are required to file a Verified Petition for Registration, while those that had earlier accreditations only need to submit a Verified Manifestation in lieu of a Petition for Registration.
The re-registration process is expected to ensure that all political parties and sectoral organizations participating in the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections comply with the updated rules under the new law.
