The intense summer heat continues to scorch parts of the Philippines, with the state weather bureau warning that nearly 50 areas nationwide are under “danger” level heat index conditions on Friday, May 15.

According to PAGASA, several monitoring stations are expected to record heat index levels ranging from 42°C to 44°C, temperatures considered dangerous for prolonged outdoor exposure.

Among the areas expected to experience extreme heat are Sangley Point in Cavite, Dagupan City in Pangasinan, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, and parts of Palawan, Iloilo, and Mindanao.

The heat index refers to how hot it feels to the human body when humidity is combined with actual air temperature. Under PAGASA’s classification, a heat index between 42°C and 51°C falls under the “danger” category, where heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke become more likely.

Despite occasional rains in some areas, humidity remains high, making temperatures feel even hotter throughout the day.

PAGASA advised the public to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially from late morning to mid-afternoon when temperatures usually peak. The weather bureau also urged people to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activities.

Health experts warned that extreme heat may cause dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, nausea, and heat stroke, particularly among children, senior citizens, outdoor workers, and people with existing health conditions.

The Philippines continues to experience soaring temperatures as the dry season reaches its peak this May. PAGASA said it will continue issuing daily heat index bulletins as extreme weather conditions persist across the country.
