Rep. Leila de Lima on Tuesday said the upcoming impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte should be viewed as part of due process and an opportunity for her to answer the allegations being thrown against her.
Speaking during a press conference with the House prosecution panel, De Lima stressed that the impeachment proceedings are not meant to deny Duterte her rights, but instead give her the chance to defend herself before the Senate impeachment court.
“Alalahanin po natin that this is also due process for VP Sara. So pagkakataon niya ito,” De Lima said.
“It’s time for her to face and answer the accusations against her,” she added.
The former senator also said there should be no reason to avoid the proceedings if the Vice President believes she has done nothing wrong.
“Kung walang kasalanan, dapat walang iniiwasan o walang dapat iwasan. Wala rin dapat pagtatakpan at hindi dapat ito hinaharang,” she said.
De Lima also mentioned reports that Duterte’s legal team is expected to formally respond to the summons issued by the Senate impeachment court.
“So well I guess I heard from the news that the counsels of VP Sara will be responding to the summons by filing the appropriate answer,” she said.
“So pagkakataon niya ito. This is due process for her,” de Lima added.
The statements came ahead of the highly anticipated impeachment trial of Sara Duterte before the Senate acting as an impeachment court, a process expected to draw national attention in the coming weeks.
