Authorities confirmed Friday that six people have died in landslides triggered by continuous heavy rains across the region, as local governments scrambled to suspend classes and work to prevent further casualties.
Ednar Dayanghirang, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense - Davao Region, said that as of 11 a.m. on Feb. 20, 2026, two fatalities were reported in Monkayo and four in Mati City. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing in affected areas.
Shear Line Brings Relentless Downpour
The adverse weather is being caused by a shear line, bringing moderate to heavy rains across the region. With the ground already saturated, local officials moved swiftly to suspend classes and, in some areas, government work to ensure public safety.
Davao del Norte on Alert
In Davao del Norte, several municipalities suspended classes, including Carmen, Asuncion, Kapalong, San Isidro, Santo Tomas, New Corella, and Talaingod.
The province’s three cities — Panabo, Tagum, and Island Garden City of Samal — also announced class suspensions.
No Classes in Davao City
In Davao City, classes at all levels, both in public and private schools, were postponed due to the persistent rains.
Work Suspended in Davao de Oro
The provincial government of Davao de Oro suspended work in government offices following a recommendation from its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO). However, frontline, emergency, and essential services continue to operate.
Several municipalities in the province — Mabini, Maco, Maragusan, Nabunturan, Mawab, Monkayo, Compostela, New Bataan, and Montevista — also declared suspension of classes.
Davao Occidental Shifts to Safety Mode
In Davao Occidental, the local governments of Malita, Jose Abad Santos, and Sarangani suspended classes.
Don Marcelino and Sta. Maria suspended both work and classes, while the Schools Division of Davao Occidental directed its personnel to shift to work-from-home arrangements.
More Suspensions in Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur
In Davao Oriental, class deferments were declared in Boston, Cateel, Baganga, Caraga, Banaybanay, Lupon, Manay, Tarragona, San Isidro, Governor Generoso, and Mati City.
Meanwhile, in Davao del Sur, classes in the towns of Sta. Cruz, Magsaysay, Hagonoy, Padada, Kiblawan, Sulop, Matanao, Malalag, and Digos City were also postponed as a precaution against the continuing downpour.
