Defensor Hits AFP, Navy For Wading Into Alleged Cash Delivery Claims
Mike Defensor/AFP FILE
Former lawmaker Mike Defensor is questioning why the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine Navy have stepped into the issue surrounding alleged cash deliveries involving former Marines, saying the controversy revolves around corruption allegations and not military operations.
Defensor argued that the AFP’s decision to speak as an institution is unusual since no accusation was made against the organization itself. He also raised concerns over why the Navy is leading inquiries when the matter involves supposed illicit transactions and alleged connections to businessman Zaldy Co—not maritime or defense-related activity.
According to Defensor, the core of the controversy lies in determining whether the claims made by former Marine personnel are true, including assertions that they once worked under Co and allegedly delivered suitcases of money. He emphasized that the public’s focus should be on whether these activities took place, instead of which military branch chose to issue a statement.
Defensor maintained that the individuals who came forward are former soldiers who believe they are upholding their duty to the nation. He added that both military personnel and civilians share the responsibility of protecting the country and safeguarding future generations.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Marine Corps was cited in the AFP’s official release, where the military stressed that the allegations announced by a private lawyer remain unverified. The AFP noted that these claims must undergo proper legal and investigative procedures before any conclusions can be drawn.
The AFP also reminded the public to be cautious of unverified statements amplified through media channels, warning that such actions can fuel misinformation. It urged all involved parties to allow due process to move forward, saying the Filipino people deserve facts grounded in evidence.
As of now, the claims—ranging from alleged cash deliveries to the possible involvement of influential individuals—remain under scrutiny, leav
