Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon personally led the inspection of the Andaya Highway stretch in Sipocot, Camarines Sur on March 16, confirming that initial repairs are now complete and the road is ready to handle the expected surge of travelers.

For many commuters, this development comes as a relief. The highway—part of the vital Maharlika Highway—has long been criticized for its uneven surface and potholes, which slowed down travel and caused inconvenience, especially during peak seasons like Semana Santa.

This time, authorities made sure repairs were done ahead of the annual exodus. Dizon emphasized that the route serves not only residents of Bicol but also thousands of passengers and cargo vehicles bound for the Visayas and Mindanao.

“Hindi lang ito para sa Bicol. Lahat ng bumabyahe pa-Visayas at Mindanao dumadaan dito,” Dizon said, highlighting the highway’s importance in connecting major parts of the country. He added that completing the repairs within the Holy Week timeline was a priority to ease congestion and improve safety.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) carried out patching, resurfacing, and clearing operations along critical sections of the road. While these are considered initial repairs, officials assured the public that more long-term improvements are already being planned to prevent the return of damaged segments.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has repeatedly stressed the need for reliable infrastructure, especially during high-traffic periods, noting that better roads not only cut travel time but also reduce the risk of accidents.

With the Andaya Highway now in better shape, travelers can expect a smoother, faster, and less stressful journey—just in time to reunite with their families for Holy Week.

Authorities, meanwhile, are reminding motorists to remain cautious, follow traffic advisories, and prepare for possible congestion as the volume of travelers continues to rise in the coming days.
