Public Works and Highways Sec. Vince Dizon on Tuesday led the inspection of a major flood control project in Calumpit as the Department of Public Works and Highways began demolishing what officials described as a substandard dike along the Bagbag River.
The old structure in Barangay Calizon is being replaced with a stronger and higher river control system following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to fix and upgrade defective flood control projects nationwide.
During the inspection, Sec. Dizon, together with Calumpit Mayor Lem Faustino, checked the ongoing installation of 15-meter sheet piles that will reinforce the new flood-control structure.
The project is expected to be completed by March 2027 and is seen to provide better flood protection for around 3,000 residents living near the river.
According to the DPWH, the upgraded structure aims to prevent severe flooding in vulnerable communities in Calumpit, one of the areas in Bulacan frequently affected by rising river waters during heavy rains and typhoons.
