DPWH Sec. Vince Dizon is taking the lead on the ground as efforts ramp up to fully contain the massive fire at the Navotas sanitary landfill.
As of latest updates, nearly half of the affected area has already been put out, covering a significant portion of the 44-hectare site where about 90 percent had been impacted by the blaze. The progress comes through the combined efforts of the Bureau of Fire Protection, local government units, and teams from the Department of Public Works and Highways deploying personnel and heavy equipment.
Dizon personally inspected the site on April 28 alongside experts from Japan, looking into more effective ways to finally extinguish the fire. He was joined by Endo Kazuya, Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco, and members of the Japan Disaster Relief team.
According to Dizon, the scale of the fire has been challenging, with the landfill’s size making the operation far from simple. He acknowledged the critical role of Japan’s technical assistance, noting that the Philippines has limited experience dealing with fires of this magnitude.
Meanwhile, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources continues to advise nearby residents to wear face masks, especially those in vulnerable groups, due to ongoing air quality concerns.
The government’s response remains in full force following directives from Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to tap international expertise and strengthen coordination among agencies to speed up containment.
Authorities say operations will continue until the fire is completely extinguished, with the goal of restoring normal conditions for affected communities as soon as possible.
