Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon is taking the lead in the urgent response to the collapsed Surallah–Lake Sebu–Maitum Road, assuring residents that the damaged highway will not just be repaired — it will be replaced with a stronger and safer structure.
The road, a key link connecting parts of Sarangani and South Cotabato, gave way last week, disrupting travel and raising safety concerns among motorists and nearby communities.
During his inspection on Tuesday, Dizon said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had ordered the immediate rehabilitation of the collapsed section to ensure safe and efficient travel in the area.
According to Dizon, the President has been clear about two priorities. First, the government must respond quickly because lives are affected. Second, critical infrastructure like roads must be maintained properly and restored without delay.
Instead of temporary patchwork, authorities are looking at replacing the damaged portion to prevent future collapses and ensure long-term stability. Engineers are now assessing the extent of the damage and identifying the most durable solution for the terrain.
For residents who rely on the road daily — from farmers transporting goods to students and workers traveling between towns — the swift action brings relief.
Dizon emphasized that the directive is simple. Move fast, secure the area, and make sure the rebuilt road is stronger than before.
With inspections underway and rehabilitation plans being finalized, the government says restoring safe passage between Sarangani and South Cotabato is now a top priority.
