The long-delayed Villasis–Sto. Tomas Bridge in Pangasinan is finally moving forward, with Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon ordering the project fast-tracked after nearly a decade of stagnation. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also directed agencies to ensure the bridge becomes fully operational before the end of his term in 2027.

The bridge, once completed, is expected to transform travel between Villasis and Sto. Tomas, cutting the usual 30-minute drive down to around five minutes. Residents and motorists have long been calling for its completion, saying the daily detours add unnecessary travel time and fuel costs.

Dizon said the DPWH is aligning resources to make sure the project is fully funded and no longer subjected to piecemeal budgeting, which previously caused the delays. He noted that current assessments show the bridge can be completed within the Marcos administration’s timeline, provided the funding flow remains uninterrupted.

Diversion Road Project Also Accelerated

Along with the bridge, Dizon has also pushed for full funding for the long-stalled Binalonan–Laoac–Villasis Diversion Road—another project expected to significantly ease traffic in central Pangasinan.

The diversion road aims to speed up movement from Urdaneta to Binalonan, allowing motorists to bypass congested town centers. The DPWH believes the project will greatly improve traffic flow for daily commuters, cargo vehicles, and travelers heading to various parts of the province.

According to the agency, securing full and continuous funding from Congress will be crucial to completing both major infrastructure projects. The administration has emphasized that delaying essential road works only extends the burden on the public, especially in high-traffic corridors.

With these renewed efforts, the government aims to finally end years of waiting for the people of Pangasinan, who have long relied on alternative routes due to unfinished infrastructure. Residents are hopeful that, this time, the projects will push through to completion and deliver long-promised ease in travel.
