Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered the removal of two officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera Administrative Region (DPWH-CAR) following a deadly road incident in La Trinidad that killed a cyclist.

Dismissed from their posts were District Engineer Isagani Cayme and Engineer III Marjory Banao after an investigation found that the collapsed section of the road in Beckel lacked proper safety measures, including warning signages, traffic control devices, and concrete barriers.

The cyclist reportedly fell into a ravine after passing through the damaged portion of the road, triggering public outrage and calls for accountability.

The action came after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed government agencies to hold accountable officials and employees whose negligence puts the public at risk.

Dizon stressed that tragedies caused by lapses in safety protocols should never happen again, saying government workers and contractors have a responsibility to ensure roads under construction or repair remain safe for motorists and pedestrians.

The DPWH chief also issued a strong warning to contractors failing to comply with strict safety requirements during construction projects. According to Dizon, violators could face contract termination, blacklisting, and even criminal charges if negligence results in danger or loss of life.
