DOJ Team Heads To Czech Republic For Zaldy Co Talks

The Department of Justice said it is sending a high-level team to the Czech Republic on Thursday, April 23, to coordinate with Czech authorities on efforts to bring back former lawmaker Zaldy Co to the Philippines.

Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida and Chief State Counsel Dennis Chan are set to meet their counterparts abroad to discuss possible legal steps for Co’s return.

“The purpose of this mission is to open formal dialogue with our Czech counterparts and to explore all available legal avenues for Co’s return to the Philippines to face the charges pending against him before the Sandiganbayan,” according to the DOJ.

Co is facing charges before the Sandiganbayan, the country’s special court handling graft and corruption cases involving public officials.

The DOJ said the team will explore several legal options, including deportation, extradition, and the possible use of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which both the Philippines and the Czech Republic have signed.

However, the department stressed that there is no fixed timeline for Co’s possible return, as any action will depend on discussions with Czech authorities and compliance with both countries’ laws and international legal procedures.
