Eala Falls To Mertens In Madrid Open
Alex Eala came into Madrid ready to fight for every point—but ran into a player who simply had all the answers.
The 20-year-old Filipina bowed out of the Mutua Madrid Open after a tough 6-2, 6-1 loss to Elise Mertens in the second round on Friday at the Caja Mágica in Spain.
Eala actually started strong, jumping to a 40-love lead in the opening game. But Mertens, known for her composure and court awareness, flipped the script—saving all the break points and stealing the game to immediately shift momentum.
That moment set the tone.
Eala managed to stay within reach early, even holding serve to trail just 3-2. But from there, Mertens took full control. Mixing powerful baseline shots with well-timed drop shots, the Belgian kept Eala on the defensive and dictated the pace of the match.
Mertens wrapped up the first set in just over half an hour, 6-2.
The second set looked closer than the score suggests. The opening four games all went to deuce, but Mertens proved sharper in the big moments, converting key points to surge ahead 4-0. Eala eventually got on the board, but the gap was too wide to close, with Mertens sealing the win in the seventh game.
A consistent presence on tour, Mertens has reached as high as world No. 12 in singles and has enjoyed significant success in doubles, including multiple Grand Slam titles.
Despite the loss, Eala is expected to continue her campaign in doubles, where she remains one of the rising young talents gaining experience on the WTA stage.
