Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala continued her impressive run on grass courts after pulling off a straight-set victory over reigning Queen’s Club champion Donna Vekic in the opening round of the Berlin Open on Wednesday.

Eala, currently ranked No. 35 in the world, defeated the Croatian veteran and Olympic silver medalist, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the Round of 16 of the WTA 500 tournament in Germany. The win marked her second victory over Vekic this year after also beating her at the Auckland Open in January.

The 21-year-old Filipina entered Berlin riding a wave of confidence following her title run at the Birmingham Open, where she captured her first grass-court championship. That momentum carried over against Vekic, who had just won the prestigious Queen’s Club title in London days earlier after defeating British star Emma Raducanu in the final.

Despite facing one of the hottest players on the surface, Eala held her composure and delivered another strong performance to secure a spot in the second round. The victory also reinforced her growing reputation as one of the WTA Tour’s rising stars and one of the most dangerous players on grass this season.

With the win, Eala arranged a blockbuster Round of 16 showdown against former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, currently ranked No. 2 in the world. It will be another major test for the Filipina as she continues her preparations for Wimbledon.

Eala has enjoyed a breakthrough 2026 campaign, highlighted by her steady climb in the rankings and a series of victories over established stars. Her latest triumph in Berlin further boosts hopes that the young Filipina can make a deep run during the grass-court season.

As Wimbledon draws near, Eala's confidence appears to be growing at the perfect time.
