Supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte themselves are already calling for the impeachment trial to move forward so the allegations against her can finally be answered in public, according to Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co.
Speaking during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, Co pointed to a recent April 2026 OCTA Research survey showing that 69 percent of Filipinos want the Senate impeachment trial to proceed.
According to the young lawmaker, even many of Duterte’s own supporters believe the trial should happen so the Vice President would have the opportunity to clear her name through the constitutional process.
Co said the numbers already reflect strong public sentiment, noting that many Filipinos simply want the issue settled openly and properly.
The House of Representatives of the Philippines earlier impeached Duterte over allegations involving the supposed misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Duterte, however, has repeatedly denied the accusations and insisted the charges against her are baseless.
Co also expressed disappointment that Duterte allegedly failed to directly respond to the accusations despite several opportunities during the House Committee on Justice hearings.
She said many Filipinos have been waiting for clear answers regarding the issues raised against the Vice President, but those explanations never fully came during the proceedings.
At the same time, Co warned that recent leadership changes in the Senate could influence the direction of the impeachment case, claiming there are still efforts from some Duterte allies to delay or completely stop the trial from happening.
Despite this, she maintained that the impeachment complaint is backed by government records and official documents that deserve to be thoroughly examined in a full Senate trial.
For Co, the impeachment process should ultimately continue so all evidence can be presented publicly and both sides can finally address the controversy head-on.
