Two Chinese nationals who overstayed their visas—one of them even posing as a Filipino—were arrested last week in Tacloban City for violating Philippine immigration laws, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Friday.

Authorities identified the suspects as Zhu Fulin, 51, and Wu Huoyan, 53, who were nabbed at an e-bike commercial establishment in Barangay 91, Abucay. Both were found working despite holding only tourist visas, which strictly prohibit employment.

Immigration records showed Zhu had no valid immigration documents and had been overstaying since 2023. Wu, meanwhile, had been in the country illegally since 2020. When questioned, Wu allegedly tried to pass himself off as a Filipino by presenting a Philippine identification card, raising further red flags.

The operation was conducted with the help of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, government intelligence units, the City Intelligence Unit, and the Tacloban City Police Office.

Immigration Commissioner Joel Viado warned that the government is cracking down on foreigners who abuse the system. “We will not tolerate foreigners who overstay, misrepresent themselves, or illegally engage in work at the expense of our laws and our people,” he said.

Both suspects have been brought to Manila and are now facing deportation proceedings.
