Four individuals linked to the fatal hazing of a 19-year-old maritime student have surrendered to authorities, police confirmed, as the investigation into the case continues.

The suspects, believed to be members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity, turned themselves in at the General Trias City Police Station on Sunday, March 8, 2026. They were accompanied by legal counsel and representatives of the fraternity’s national council and are now in police custody.

Their surrender brings the total number of individuals who have yielded to authorities to six, including the driver who transported the victim to the hospital earlier.

What Happened to Alcedo

The victim, Mark Kenneth Alcedo, a 19-year-old first-year Bachelor of Science in Maritime Transportation student, was brought to General Trias Medical Center on March 1, 2026, after sustaining severe injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

An autopsy revealed that Alcedo died from severe blunt force trauma to the lower extremities, along with multiple other injuries consistent with a violent initiation ritual. Investigators identified 21 individuals potentially involved, with nine considered primary suspects.

The hazing incident is being investigated under the Anti-Hazing Law (Republic Act 11053), which imposes penalties of up to life imprisonment and fines of up to ₱3 million for deaths resulting from hazing.

Wider Reaction

The case has renewed public concern over illegal fraternity hazing practices in the Philippines. Authorities, including Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla and PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño, have called on other suspects to surrender and urged strict enforcement of anti-hazing laws.

Alcedo’s family has demanded accountability, hoping the legal process will bring justice and deter similar tragedies. This incident follows previous high-profile cases, such as the 2023 death of John Matthew Salilig, another student who died during fraternity initiation rites.

Authorities continue to urge remaining suspects to surrender as investigations proceed and charges are prepared.
