Overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East will soon be able to call their families in the Philippines for free following an order from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The President directed telecommunications companies to provide free communication services to Filipinos working in several Middle Eastern countries amid rising tensions in the region.
In a Facebook post, Marcos said the initiative will be carried out through the Libreng Tawag Program, allowing OFWs in Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia to contact their families without paying for calls.
The program aims to help Filipino workers check on their loved ones and assure them that they are safe during the ongoing uncertainty in the region.
Marcos said the government wants to make sure distance and cost will not prevent families from communicating during difficult times.
The President also announced that free call stations will be set up in selected business centers in major malls across the country. These stations will allow families in the Philippines to easily reach their relatives working abroad.
According to Marcos, the goal is to give both OFWs and their families peace of mind.
Through these efforts we want to ensure that our kababayans can remain connected with their families, offer comfort to one another and confirm their safety without additional financial burden, the President said.
The free call program is part of the government’s broader efforts to support overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East and reflects the administration’s continued commitment to protecting the welfare of Filipinos working abroad.
