Garin Dismisses Charter Change Rumors As 'Pure Chismis' Amid VP Sara Impeachment Talks

Deputy Speaker Janette Garin has brushed aside claims linking the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte to alleged plans for Charter change and term extensions, calling the rumors “pure chismis.”
Garin issued the statement after Sen. Imee Marcos raised the possibility in a radio interview that the Constitution could be amended if the impeachment proceedings against Duterte fail to gather enough votes in the Senate.
The senator also mentioned supposed proposals to extend the terms of incumbent lawmakers and President Bongbong Marcos by three more years.
But Garin strongly denied that any such discussions are happening inside the House of Representatives, saying the allegations are misleading and politically charged.
According to the Iloilo lawmaker, spreading rumors about a “no-election scenario” only creates confusion and unnecessarily stirs public fear, especially since Filipinos have long rejected any attempt to suspend elections or extend terms in office.
She also accused some personalities of trying to divert attention from the real issue by dragging the administration into speculative narratives.
Garin stressed that the impeachment process is already clearly outlined in the Constitution and warned against using conspiracy theories or unverified claims to influence public opinion.
She added that leaders should help maintain stability and public trust instead of fueling tensions through careless statements.
“At a time when emotions are already high, public officials should be more responsible with their words,” Garin said, emphasizing that Filipinos deserve facts and honesty rather than fear-driven political narratives.
The impeachment case against Duterte has dominated political discussions since the House of Representatives formally transmitted the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate, which has already convened as an impeachment court.
Garin said political leaders should allow constitutional processes to move forward without adding further confusion through unsupported allegations.
She maintained that public discussions should remain focused on truth, accountability, and responsible leadership instead of speculation meant to score political points.
