Barangay Ginebra San Miguel showed grit and discipline Sunday night, overpowering TNT Tropang Giga, 93-86, to lock in the No. 2 seed in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup playoffs at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Facing the massive presence of 7-foot-3 import Bol Bol, the Gin Kings entered the game knowing rebounding would be the key battle. And when the final buzzer sounded, it was clear Ginebra answered the challenge.
Import Justin Brownlee delivered another all-around performance with 18 points and 15 rebounds while battling Bol Bol inside the paint. Although the TNT import exploded for 33 points and 10 rebounds, Ginebra’s collective effort and defensive pressure proved enough to pull away late in the game.
RJ Abarrientos added 17 points, while Norbert Torres chipped in 10. Scottie Thompson also provided key contributions with nine points and solid floor leadership.
The victory pushed Ginebra to a 9-3 record heading into the playoffs, setting up a quarterfinal showdown against seventh-seeded Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Meanwhile, TNT fell to 6-6 and slid to the No. 8 spot, where it now faces top-seeded NLEX Road Warriors in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the Mother’s Day doubleheader, Magnolia Hotshots defeated Meralco Bolts, 93-76, to clinch the fifth seed and arrange another quarterfinal matchup against the Bolts.
The remaining playoff pairing will feature Rain or Shine Elasto Painters taking on San Miguel Beermen.
As top four finishers, NLEX, Ginebra, Rain or Shine, and Meralco will carry a twice-to-beat advantage entering the next round.
Ginebra coach Tim Cone praised his team’s defensive effort against Bol Bol, saying the squad worked hard to limit the TNT star despite his huge scoring output.
Abarrientos also credited the team’s unity and hustle, saying everyone contributed in trying to contain TNT’s towering import.
With momentum now on their side, the Gin Kings believe they are more than ready for the playoffs as they chase another championship run.
