A member of the House prosecution panel said fake news and online trolls are among the biggest challenges facing lawmakers ahead of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Senior Deputy Majority Leader Lorenz Defensor said disinformation continues to affect public understanding of the impeachment proceedings.
“One of the biggest challenges that we face is fake news, trolls na mali ang ikinakalat na balita, maling ebidensya ang binabarena sa utak ng ating mga kababayan,” Defensor said.
“Ang fake news at trolls dapat matigil na ’yan,” he added.
Defensor stressed that the impeachment process is about accountability, but warned that false information online could distract the public from the truth behind the case.
“This impeachment is one of the biggest steps that we can take for accountability to start in this country,” Defensor said.
“Pero dapat ma-overcome din natin ang fake news dahil hindi natin maaabot ang katotohanan, hindi lang sa impeachment na ito but truth in everyday living kung hindi natin ma-overcome ang fake news at mga trolls na umaatake, hindi lang sa House of Representatives but to truth itself,” he added.
The remarks were made during a briefing by the 11-member House prosecution panel that will handle the impeachment case before the Senate acting as an impeachment court.
The prosecution team is led by Gerville Luistro, chairperson of the House Committee on Justice.
Other members of the panel include Chel Diokno, Leila de Lima, Terry Ridon, and several other lawmakers from the House of Representatives.
