Manila Representative Joel Chua on Monday said the House prosecution panel is fully prepared to present its case before the Senate impeachment court following the formal opening of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Chua, one of the 11 House prosecutors, said the panel is ready to carry out its constitutional duty with professionalism and respect for the legal process.

“We acknowledge the convening of the Senate impeachment court for the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte,” Chua said in a statement issued shortly after senators formally convened as judges in the high-profile case.

The impeachment proceedings stem from allegations involving the supposed misuse of public funds, questions surrounding unexplained wealth, and alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and other government officials.

Chua, who chairs the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, stressed that the impeachment process is part of the Constitution’s built-in accountability mechanism for top-ranking public officials.

“This is a constitutional duty entrusted to the House of Representatives, especially in matters involving accountability of impeachable public officers,” he said.

The Senate’s move to officially open the impeachment court follows weeks of political tension inside the chamber, including a leadership shakeup and controversy involving Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a known Duterte ally who has been linked to issues surrounding the International Criminal Court’s investigation into the previous administration’s anti-drug campaign.

Despite the political noise surrounding the case, Chua said the prosecution panel remains focused on presenting evidence and following the court’s procedures.

“We are prepared to present the evidence before the impeachment court and to comply with its lawful orders, directives and procedures,” he said.

According to Chua, the immediate goal of the prosecution team is to ensure that all evidence will be properly examined and scrutinized before the Senate tribunal.

“At this stage, our duty is clear: to help ensure that the facts are heard, the evidence is tested and the process is carried out in a manner worthy of the trust of the Filipino people,” he added.

Under the Constitution, a two-thirds vote of the Senate is needed to convict an impeached official, which could result in removal from office and perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
