Members of the House prosecution panel handling the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte said they are not worried about how the trial could affect their political future in the 2028 elections.
During a press conference on Tuesday, lawmakers were asked whether prosecuting Duterte could hurt their chances with voters in the next national elections.
San Juan Representative Ysabel Maria Zamora said the panel remains focused on fulfilling its constitutional duty.
“Hindi po kami nababahala,” Zamora said.
She stressed that the prosecutors are simply carrying out their responsibilities as members of Congress and representatives of their constituents.
“We are fulfilling our constitutional duty as House prosecutors, as congressmen, as representatives of our constituents. And lahat po kami ay nandito para lang ipakita ang ebidensiya laban sa Bise Presidente na nakita naming may pagkakasala. Kaya nga po naglabas po tayo ng articles of impeachment,” she said.
Zamora added that they are prepared to face any political consequences because they believe the public and senator-judges will evaluate the evidence fairly during the impeachment proceedings.
“Hindi po kami natatakot sa susunond na eleksiyon dahil naniniwala po kami na makikita ng taong bayan ang ebidensiya and we believe that senators themselves will see the evidence and it is now incumbent upon the senators to fulfill their constitutional duty as well,” she added.
The statement was echoed by Rep. Gerville Luistro, who heads the House prosecution panel.
“We are free to elect our leaders. But please understand the 11 prosecutors, we are simply responding to a constitutional duty. As a matter of fact, with all due respect to our constituents, this is not a question of, natutuwa ba sila o hindi, gusto ba nila o hindi. This is a duty we really have to face,” Luistro said.
The impeachment trial of Sara Duterte before the Senate is expected to become one of the country’s biggest political events leading into the 2028 election season.
