A House leader has called on the Senate to keep the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte moving forward, raising concerns that renewed investigations into alleged flood control anomalies could overshadow one of the country's most significant constitutional processes.

House trial spokesperson and Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong said the Senate’s decision to resume its inquiry into the alleged flood control scam ahead of the impeachment trial has sparked questions about the chamber’s priorities and timing.

According to Adiong, government agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Office of the Ombudsman should be allowed to continue their respective investigations to avoid overlapping efforts and public confusion.

He suggested that the renewed focus on flood control projects could shift public attention away from the impeachment proceedings against the vice president.

Adiong stressed that while both the flood control inquiry and the impeachment trial involve questions of accountability, the impeachment case concerns the nation’s second-highest official and deserves urgent attention.

He also raised concerns over the formation of the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee investigating flood control projects. Adiong cited statements made by former Senate president and current Minority Leader Tito Sotto, who reportedly questioned the legality of the subcommittee’s creation, arguing that it should have undergone approval by the Senate plenary.

The House official said such concerns reinforce criticisms that certain Senate actions are being rushed, particularly amid ongoing political controversies.

His remarks echoed those made by Rep. Jude Acidre, chairman of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education, who earlier questioned the timing of the Senate’s creation of a Blue Ribbon subcommittee led by Rodante Marcoleta.

Acidre said many Filipinos are wondering why the investigation is being prioritized at a time when public attention is largely focused on the impeachment proceedings involving Duterte.

He also pointed out that allegations related to flood control projects have already been tackled in previous congressional hearings and are currently under review by the Ombudsman, which he described as the proper venue for determining accountability.

As discussions continue, House leaders maintain that both issues are important but insist that the Senate should not lose sight of its constitutional duty to hear and act on the impeachment case. For them, ensuring a timely and credible impeachment process remains essential to maintaining public trust in the country’s democratic institutions.
