House Wants Direct Reply From VP Sara, Not Delay Tactics - Ortega

The House of Representatives is expecting impeached Vice President Sara Duterte to directly respond to the impeachment allegations against her instead of filing motions that could delay the proceedings, Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega said on Tuesday.

Ortega stressed that lawmakers are hoping to receive a detailed answer from Duterte as the Senate impeachment court’s 10-day non-extendible deadline for her response approaches on June 1.

“We are hoping to receive an answer, not a motion to dismiss,” Ortega said.

According to the House leader, any move seeking the dismissal of the case or asking the Senate impeachment court to wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling on pending impeachment-related petitions would only slow down the process.

He described such possible actions from Duterte’s camp as “dilatory tactics,” adding that the Senate impeachment court has so far acted swiftly on the case and is unlikely to entertain unnecessary delays.

Ortega also urged the Vice President to finally address the accusations publicly during the impeachment trial, pointing out that she had repeatedly skipped House impeachment proceedings in the past.

“She should seize this opportunity so the people can finally hear from her,” he said.

The impeachment complaint against Duterte includes allegations of unexplained wealth, failure to fully disclose assets in her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs), alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, and former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, as well as accusations involving graft, bribery, and misuse of public funds.

House prosecutors earlier claimed they possess strong documentary evidence against the Vice President, including reports from the Anti-Money Laundering Council allegedly tracking financial transactions involving Duterte and her husband from her time as Davao City vice mayor up to 2024.

Lawmakers also pointed to the reported increase in Duterte’s net worth, which allegedly grew from P7.25 million in 2007 to P88.5 million in 2024.
