The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) clarified that its surprise gathering along EDSA was meant to show support for Senator Rodante Marcoleta amid reports that he could face plunder charges.
In a statement delivered by INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala, the religious group said it is not opposed to the enforcement of laws, but strongly opposes what it described as the misuse of legal processes to shield corruption and silence those exposing wrongdoing.
According to the INC, Marcoleta has been one of the leading figures investigating the alleged irregularities in the government’s flood control projects, an issue that has drawn public attention in recent months. The group noted that even after he was replaced as chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, Marcoleta continued pushing for inquiries into what he believes to be one of the country’s biggest corruption scandals.
The church questioned why a lawmaker who has been vocal in uncovering alleged anomalies is now the one being targeted with a case carrying a non-bailable offense. It argued that if Marcoleta is detained while facing trial, his efforts to pursue investigations and expose those allegedly involved in the controversy could be halted.
INC also defended the senator against allegations linked to campaign donations, stressing that the funds in question were not taken from government coffers but came from supporters of his senatorial bid. The group further cited a previous ruling by the Commission on Elections, which it said found no violation in the campaign contributions received by Marcoleta.
The church emphasized that its support for the senator is rooted in its long-standing call for transparency, accountability, justice, and peace. It warned that filing charges against Marcoleta would not stop its members from demanding accountability from those responsible for alleged corruption.
“Selective justice is an injustice,” the INC said, insisting that it will continue speaking out on issues it believes affect the welfare of ordinary Filipinos.
The statement came as questions continued to swirl over the possible filing of plunder charges against Marcoleta and the broader investigation into the controversial flood control fund projects.
