A major step toward water security in the Negros Island Region was marked on January 19, as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the inspection and inauguration of the Sum-Ag Water Treatment Plant, one of the largest water facilities in the region.

Designed to improve access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water, the plant is expected to produce up to 75 million liters of potable water daily, benefiting around 100,000 households or an estimated 500,000 residents in Bacolod City and the Municipality of Murcia.

The Embassy of Israel in the Philippines welcomed the project’s completion, citing it as a strong example of meaningful international cooperation. President Marcos underscored that the facility was built with the help of global expertise, including Israeli water treatment and automation technologies, which enable efficient purification, real-time monitoring, and automated controls to ensure a consistent and safe water supply.

Israeli innovation is represented through Watermatic International, whose advanced systems highlight Israel’s globally recognized expertise in managing limited water resources through innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.

Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh, who attended the inauguration, expressed pride in the growing partnership between Israel and the Philippines, as well as in the broader international collaboration that includes the European Union, the Government of the Netherlands, and Climate Fund Managers.

“This project reflects vision, technology, trust, and the transfer of know-how. Despite having more than 60 percent of its land classified as desert, Israel learned to overcome water scarcity through innovation, including drip irrigation and advanced water technologies,” Ambassador Kursh said.

“We are proud to share Israel’s experience and practical solutions to support water and food security for Filipinos. Water is life — ang tubig ay buhay.”

The Sum-Ag Water Treatment Plant now stands as a model for climate-resilient infrastructure, showing how innovation and partnerships can create long-term benefits for local communities.

Looking ahead, the Embassy of Israel said it remains committed to strengthening cooperation with the Philippine government and its partners in advancing sustainable development, technology transfer, and inclusive growth.
